Academic requirements

STEM Admission Requirements

64 credit program by adding 11 credits from 3 courses to the shared 53 credits mentioned above.

The Admission Requirements to the program are:

  • Four-year Bachelor of Science degree (120 credit hours) or equivalent in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry or General Science with a minimum grade point average of C+ on the most recent 60 credit hours completed. Within the degree all applicants must have one teachable major or two teachable minors (courses taught in secondary schools).
  • A teachable minor consists of eighteen (18) credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 3000 or 4000), in addition to required lower division courses. A teachable minor consists of eighteen (18) credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 3000 or 4000), in addition to required lower division courses. A teachable major consists of thirty (30) credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 3000 or 4000) in addition to required lower division courses.
  • Successful completion, with a C+ average of six (6) credit hours of acceptable English Literature and Composition at any level. Courses in linguistics, language study, grammar, technical or business writing, communication, or English as a second language are not acceptable to meet the English requirement.
  • While there is no formal requirement for volunteer or paid experience working with school-aged children or youth, we strongly encourage applicants to gain relevant experience prior to applying. Time spent in classrooms, youth programs, tutoring, coaching, or other group settings can help you confirm your interest in teaching, develop foundational skills, and strengthen your application. Applicants without prior experience will still be considered; however, those with some background working with children or youth are often better prepared for the expectations of the program and the profession.

When assessing candidates the factors are weighted as follows:

  • 40% GPA
  • 60% other factors combined (see below)
    • Two (2) confidential statements from referees
    • Letter of Intent
    • Personal Interview
Humanities Admission Requirements

62 credit program by adding 9 credits from 2 courses to the shared 53 credits mentioned above.

The Admission Requirements to the program are:

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree (120 credit hours) or equivalent in English or for Social Studies in Geography, History, Anthropology, First Nations Studies, Sociology, Economics, Political Science, or Environmental Studies including at least 3 credits in each of Canadian History, Canadian Geography, and Canadian First Nations Studies/Anthropology with a minimum grade point average of C+ on the most recent 60 credit hours completed. Within the degree all applicants must have one teachable major or two teachable minors (courses taught in secondary schools).
  • A teachable minor consists of eighteen (18) credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 3000 or 4000), in addition to required lower division courses. A teachable major consists of thirty (30) credit hours of upper division courses (numbered 3000 or 4000) in addition to required lower division courses.

Tuition Deposit

If you are accepted, the Registrar’s Office will notify you in writing. To reserve your place, you must pay a $500 tuition deposit fee by the date specified in your offer of admission letter.

Criminal record check

To participate in a practicum, teacher candidates must have completed and submitted a Consent to Criminal Record Check form.

Persons convicted of a criminal offense or who have been given an absolute or conditional discharge should contact the BC Teacher Certification Branch (TCB) for clarification of their status before undertaking a teacher education program.

Program schedule

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) program is only available for on-campus studies and is full-time with courses scheduled Monday to Friday anywhere from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and subject to the Bachelor of Education Student Attendance policy
