Meet the Writing Centre Tutors

Become a Tutor

Why should I become a tutor?

  • Become part of a supportive and uplifting community of fellow students
  • Participate in experiential learning through critically reflecting on your writing and tutoring
  • Enhance your listening, writing, communication, thinking, problem-solving, and advocacy skills (and get paid for it)
  • Access professional development opportunities such as attending and/or presenting at conferences and publishing

Expectations for tutors:

  • Contribute positively to the community through learning about and demonstrating inclusive and decolonial practices
  • Develop your tutoring practice through training and reflection
  • Be available 2 or 3 hours per week to tutor during the semester
  • Exhibit good interpersonal and critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrate reliability, consistency, a growth mindset, and clear communication

How do I become a tutor?

If you are interested in joining our community, please contact jegoddard@tru.ca with the following:

  • Your resume or CV
  • Your transcript. Note: A screenshot of your unofficial TRU transcript or transcripts from other institutions are satisfactory
  • Two writing samples that showcase your knowledge of academic writing structure, citation, resource integration, and argument construction. Please also share any additional creative writing samples you're proud of!
  • Applications that contain evidence of GenAI will not be accepted.

Current Opportunities:

  • We are currently accepting applications for Fall 25 and Winter 26.

For more information, please contact the Writing Centre by emailing jegoddard@tru.ca, calling 250-371-5748 or dropping by OM 1411.

Meet the Tutors

Most of our writing tutors are students. The responsibility of the tutor is to offer feedback and advice on writing, with the goal of developing students' writing skills. The responsibility of the writing tutor is not to fix or simply edit the paper or be an expert on the content. Tutors attend up to 10 hours of training on the following topics: writing, grammar, collaboration, interpersonal skills, intercultural competencies, and tutoring and writing centre theories, practices, and strategies. The interaction between the writing tutor and the writer is one of cooperation, respect, and focused learning.
