FNLG 1000 Introduction to First Nations Language 1 (3,0,0) FNLG 1000 Introduction to First Nations Language 1 (3,0,0)Credits: 3 credits This course will introduce students to the First Nations language. Emphasis will be placed on developing listening and speaking skills, conversational ability, and knowledge of grammatical structures. Little or no prior knowledge of the language is the expected entry level for this course.

FNLG 1010 First Nations Language Immersion 1 (3,0,0) FNLG 1010 First Nations Language Immersion 1 (3,0,0)Credits: 3 credits This course is designed to immerse learners in the First Nations language to develop language proficiency. DSTC students will be required to actively participate in First Nations language immersion.

FNLG 1110 First Nations Language Immersion 2 (3,0,0) FNLG 1110 First Nations Language Immersion 2 (3,0,0)Credits: 3 credits This course will permit students to build on their abilities developed in FNLG 1010 and FNLG 1100 to gain a greater understanding of the grammatical structures, while continuing to expand their vocabulary of the First Nations language.

MLAN 2700 Field School in Modern Languages (3,3,0) MLAN 2700 Field School in Modern Languages (3,3,0)Credits: 6 credits Students travel to another country for the purpose of studying language and culture. Field schools may be offered in Chinese, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, or other languages which might be taught in the future in the Modern Languages program. Students gain an awareness of the value of diverse cultures and worldviews, and reflect on and set goals for learning beyond their university experience. In the case of French only, travel may be within Canada (i.e. to Quebec). Field schools vary in length up to 6 weeks, and this may include classroom time prior to travel. Students may take this course more than once provided that the language of study is different each time.

LING 2010 Introduction to Linguistics 1 (3,0,0) LING 2010 Introduction to Linguistics 1 (3,0,0)Credits: 3 credits Students are introduced to phonetics, phonology and morphology. Students learn the basic physiology of the vocal tract, use of the International Phonetic Alphabet, sound patterning, and word formation to gain an appreciation of similarities and differences between world languages. Data from a wide variety of languages, including Indigenous languages, are used for illustrative purposes. Students are not expected to have prior knowledge of these languages, though some knowledge of at least one second language is an asset.

They are introduced to the science of sentence structure and meaning and then explore one or more topics such as Language acquisition, history, etc. Data from a wide variety of languages are used for illustrative purposes. Students are not expected to have prior knowledge of these languages, though basic knowledge of at least one second language is an asset.
